Chinese Calligraphy <The Song of Pipa> by Lim Tze Peng
Using the first few lines of the Tang Dynasty poem “Song of the Pipa” that mentions the farewell of an owner and his guest, Lim Tze Peng brings life to this emotional scene with the masterstrokes of his brush. He paints the Chinese characters of the poem with red ink to symbolize the colour of universal brotherhood. He contrasts it with a dark blue background to reflect the solemn mood of the farewell. He leaves the stanza incomplete to fuel the viewer’s interest to find out what happens next. This encourages the viewer to research more about this famous poem, as well as have a deeper appreciation of the Chinese culture.
